Surrey, BC: Williams Machinery certified their first deaf student during a Mini Excavator Operator Training Course on November 23^rd. For seasoned instructor, Eric, the day became his own learning opportunity as he observed the challenges that people with disabilities face, and gained insight into the teaching strategies needed to create a positive learning experience.

Having taught students of various abilities throughout his career, Eric believes that if a student takes his course and is committed to learning, it’s his responsibility to ensure their success.

His motto: “If someone is willing to learn, I’m willing to teach.”

With the assistance of two hand signal translators, Eric relied on repetition and demonstration to help the student clearly understand his training. If they didn’t understand, Eric changed up his explanation. Being deaf did not stop the student’s concentration as they relied on their other senses to operate the equipment safely.

We work with several employment service agencies, including Island Dead and Hard of Hearing Centre, S.U.C.C.E.S.S., Pacific Community Resources Society, Avia Employment Services and WorkBC Employment, to find individuals interested in upgrading their knowledge and skills, and gaining the certification needed to advance their career.
